Furnishing a Nursery: Creating a Safe, Stylish, and Functional Space

Designing a nursery is one of the most exciting parts of preparing for a new arrival. Now that my little Levi is 10 months old, I’ve learned firsthand what works - and what doesn’t - when it comes to creating a nursery that is both functional and beautiful. A well-furnished nursery supports the daily needs of both baby and parents, while also being a welcoming, cosy space.

1. Start with the Essentials

When furnishing a nursery, focus on the key pieces first:

  • Cot: I chose the Leander Classic cot because it’s sturdy, stylish, and meets Australian safety standards. Convertible cots like this are a great investment as they can grow with your child.

  • Change Table: For practical storage and a secure surface, I use the Leander Matty change mat in cappuccino placed on top of an IKEA Malm dresser. This combo keeps nappies, wipes, and clothes organised and within easy reach.

  • Glider / Nursing Chair: Comfort is key, especially during night feeds. I love the Il Tutto Chelsea Glider in Eggshell for feeding, cuddles, and quiet storytime with Levi.

These essentials form the foundation of your nursery and guide the rest of your design choices.

2. Prioritise Safety and Functionality

Safety is always the first priority in a nursery. Make sure furniture is secured to walls, avoid sharp edges, and choose non-toxic finishes wherever possible. Functional storage is essential - baskets, shelves, and organisers help keep nappies, clothes, and toys within easy reach without creating clutter.

3. Consider Layout and Flow

With Levi now moving around and exploring, layout matters more than ever. Place the cot away from windows, heaters, and cords for safety. Keep the change area close to nappies, wipes, and clothing to make nappy changes as smooth as possible. Leave enough open floor space for playtime and mobility.

4. Layer in Comfort and Softness

Soft textures make a nursery feel cosy and inviting. Rugs, cushions, curtains, and a few plush toys or blankets create a nurturing environment where Levi can feel secure and comfortable.

5. Add Personal and Stylish ToucheS

While functionality is essential, a nursery should also reflect your personal style. I incorporated subtle colours and a few keepsakes that are meaningful to us. Artwork, prints, or small decorative touches make the nursery feel welcoming and unique.

6. Plan for Growth

Babies grow fast. By choosing convertible furniture like the Leander Classic cot and adaptable storage solutions, the nursery evolves as your child grows. This approach reduces the need for frequent updates while keeping the space stylish and functional.

Furnishing a nursery is all about balance: safety, functionality, and style working together. With the right furniture, thoughtful layout, and personal touches, you can create a nursery that is practical, beautiful, and ready for every stage of your child’s first years.
